Kenny, First off, I just found out that you and Eric are no longer playing with Joe B. I've been in Iraq for the past two years...limited info flow out there. I'm saddened by the news. Joe is an incredible musician, but you two were his backbone; and you two made his live shows as great as they were. What a bummer.

On the Rockpalast DVD, during the opening sequence of Takin' the Hit, you played on a snare with an awesome sound.  I wanted to replicate that sound with a second snare in my set-up.  I thought I found the right one (Pork Pie piccolo), but it's not the same.  What kind of snare is it that you used?  How was it tuned?  How was it mic'd?  Kudos to Eric on that opening sequence too.  Great performance.

Hey Mo, Thanks for the kind words and the question and I hope you and your friends were all safe over there in Iraq.

That's a popcorn snare. I love that little guy. 10x5 maple Drum Workshop collectors series.

For tuning here's what I do. Start with the bottom head flip the drum over and put a stick under the snares so you don't get that rattle while you try to tune it. Crank it up pretty tight and use your finger to pull a tone out of the head near each lug. Those bottom heads are pretty thin and you will not damage it if you use your finger. Go around the lugs adjusting each lug "down then Up" till you get a nice even tone.

For the top head I crank it up till it's pretty tight then I take a stick and start hitting the drum in the center of the head adjusting each lug "down then Up" until I get the sound I'm looking for which is the sound on the Rockpalast DVD... Now adjust those snares... start loose and tighten them slowly while hitting the snare hard like your gonna hit it until you start to hear the drum getting choked then just back off a little so there tight but not choking the drum. I always use shure sm 57's on snares. That's it I hope this helps

Keep on Drummin' Kenny Kramme

Kenny - thanks a bunch. Great info. Do you tune your main snare the same way too?

Hey Mo, Yeah the main snare is tuned pretty much the same way. Although I have used a bunch of different methods live and especially in the studio (when producers want a certain sound). One tip to you is this... I have used tuning devices of all types, I've even asked drummers that had great sounding kits to tune my snare for me. The reality is there is a snare sound in your head and to find it you have to find the drum that reproduces it. Asking for help is great but sometimes other drummers tune the drum to what they hear in there head, not yours. go out and hit a bunch of new drums, hit old drums and you'll find your sound. Then you can make it even better by trying different head combinations on that drum...then tuning it will be a breeze.

Thanks, Kenny Kramme
